Dynamic Frequency Selection (DFS)
Dynamic Frequency Selection (DFS) is a feature that monitors the spectrum and selects a frequency for operation that is not already in use, to avoid causing interference to radar systems and other radio transmissions. DFS is required for WLAN devices operating in the 5 GHz band.
Why DFS Testing is Required
The 5 GHz band is shared with radar systems including weather radar and military radar. DFS is required to ensure that WLAN devices detect radar signals and vacate the channel within a specified time period. Without proper DFS operation, wireless devices can interfere with safety-critical radar systems.
DFS Testing Requirements
DFS testing is required by FCC, ISED, and ETSI for WLAN devices operating in DFS channels in the 5 GHz band. The testing verifies that the device correctly detects radar patterns and vacates the channel within the required time. DFS testing requires specialized radar simulation equipment and is performed in a controlled RF environment.
CTS DFS Capability
CTS performs DFS testing for FCC, ISED, and ETSI compliance. Our laboratory is equipped with radar simulation equipment capable of generating the radar waveforms required by FCC KDB 905462 and ETSI EN 301 893. We perform both master and client device testing and provide complete test reports for certification filing.
